Chapter 2: The One Who Walked Away

Abby's fingers touched the edge of the bundle.
Then she pulled her hand back.
She pressed both palms flat against her thighs and took one long breath.
"No," she whispered.
"No."
She stepped away from the dresser.
Gripped her cart.
Turned her back on the money completely.
In the other room, Julian Cross went very still.
In thirty-one tests across eight years, no one had ever done that.
He watched Abby move to the window and stand there with her eyes closed, one hand pressed to her chest like she was holding herself together from the inside.
Then she reached into her cart, pulled out Pearl, and said quietly — to no one — "Mom, I really needed that money."
She stood there for a moment longer.
Then she went back to work.
Julian didn't move for a long time after that.
When he finally stood up, his assistant Marcus was already in the doorway.
"Should I process her termination?" Marcus asked.
Standard procedure after a test.
Julian looked at the monitor.
Abby was cleaning the mirror above the dresser now.
Methodical.
Unhurried.
Like the $300,000 was no longer in the room.
"No," Julian said.
Marcus hesitated.
"Sir — she touched the money."
"I know what she did." Julian picked up his phone.
"Find out everything about her.
Family.
Debts.
Everything."
Marcus frowned.
"Why?"
Julian didn't answer right away.
On the screen, Abby paused her work, glanced once more at the cash — then looked away for the last time.

"Because I've never been wrong before," Julian said quietly.
"And I need to understand why I was wrong today."
