The guests were still murmuring when Margaret finally moved.
She crossed the foyer slowly, stopped in front of Emily, and did something no one expected.
She took Emily's hand in both of hers.
"I'm so sorry," Margaret whispered.
"I should have spoken sooner."
Vanessa's head snapped up.
"Don't."
Margaret ignored her.
She turned to face the room, her voice steady and clear.
"Emily has worked in this house for six years.
She has never once taken anything that didn't belong to her."
"That's enough, Mother." Vanessa's voice dropped low.
A warning.
The word landed like a stone.
Mother.
Several guests exchanged glances.
A few stepped back.
Daniel looked at Vanessa slowly.
"You never told me Margaret was your mother."
Vanessa said nothing.
"You told me you'd never met her before tonight."
Still nothing.
Then Emily looked up.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"She's known Margaret for years, Daniel.
She came to this house before.
A long time ago." Emily paused.
"Before the will was changed."
The room went completely still.
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
And from across the foyer, an older gentleman in a grey suit reached slowly into his jacket pocket…
And pulled out an envelope.
