Chapter 2: His Signature Was Already There
I found the folder by accident.
My mother-in-law had left her bag on the kitchen counter.
A corner of a brown envelope was sticking out.
I almost walked past it.
But I saw my name on it.
I pulled it out with shaking hands.
Inside was a custody petition — already filled out, already signed.
My husband's signature was at the bottom.
The date was three weeks ago.
Three weeks.
While he was kissing me goodnight.
While he was telling me everything was fine.
I confronted him that evening.
"You knew about this," I said.
"Your name is on it."
He didn't deny it.
He just looked away.
"She said it was the best option," he said quietly.
"You've been struggling.
We were worried about the baby."
"Worried?" My voice broke.
"You were going to take my child without even telling me?"
He said nothing.
Then his mother walked in.
She looked at the envelope in my hands.
She didn't look ashamed.
She looked annoyed — like I had found something I wasn't supposed to touch.
"You were never meant to see that," she said.
"But I did," I told her.
"And I've already made a copy."
Her expression changed.
That was when I noticed the second document underneath — one I hadn't read yet.
And what was written on it made my knees go weak.
