Chapter 2: Whatever She Told Him

**PART 2**
Dr.
Alvarez didn't rush me.
He sat quietly while I told him everything.
The wrist.
The wall.
The Thanksgiving that left bruises under my sleeve for two weeks.
Six years of accidents that were never accidents.
When I finished, he set the tablet down.
"Nora, I'm required by law to file a report."
Something inside me went cold and warm at the same time.
"Graham will know."
"Yes."
"His family will—"
"I understand.
But what's on these X-rays doesn't lie."
The door handle moved.
Graham's voice came through the gap before the door even opened.
"I think we've given you enough time—"
Dr.
Alvarez stepped forward and blocked the doorway.
"Mr.
Mercer.
You need to wait outside."
"She's my wife."
"And this is a medical examination.
Step back, please."
A long silence.
Then footsteps retreating.
Dr.
Alvarez turned to me.
"Is there anyone you trust?
Someone who can come tonight?"
I thought of my sister, Carol.
Three states away.
The one I had slowly stopped calling because Graham always listened from the next room.
"Maybe."
He handed me a card.
On the back, he had already written a number.
"This is the hospital's patient advocate.
She'll be here within the hour."
I looked at that card for a long moment.
Then I heard Graham's voice again — low, controlled, aimed at someone in the hallway.
"Whatever she told him in there…
it isn't the full story."
