Chapter 2: The Woman on the Bridge

"Claire Bennett.
I'm a nurse.
I pulled him out of the river."
Roman didn't move.
His eyes dropped to her bleeding hand, her bare feet, her soaked clothes.
Then back to her face.
"Why were you near my son?"
"I was walking home.
I heard him fall in.
That's it."
One of the men stepped forward.
"Boss.
The camera."
Roman didn't look away from Claire.
"What about it?"
"It caught a woman on the bridge right before the boy went in.
Same height.
Same coat color."
The air changed.
Claire felt it before she understood it.
"That wasn't me," she said.
"I came from the other direction."
Roman took one slow step toward her.
"My son doesn't fall into rivers, Miss Bennett."
"Then someone pushed him," Claire said.
"And it wasn't me.
I jumped in after him."
Ethan's voice broke through.
"She saved me, Dad.
She didn't let go."
Roman stopped.
He looked at his son for a long moment.
Then he looked back at Claire with an expression she couldn't read.
"Take her to the car."
"I'm not going anywhere with—"
"It wasn't a request."
Claire's heart slammed against her ribs.
Because the way he said it made one thing very clear.
Whoever had actually pushed Ethan into that river was still out there.
And Roman Mercer had already decided Claire knew who it was.
