Chapter 4: The Call He Made at Two in the Morning

Claire was still awake at 2:14 a.m.
She wasn't in bed.
She was sitting in the small armchair in the corner of the bedroom with her knees drawn up, listening to the sounds of the house the way she used to when their daughter Mia was small and every creak on the stairs meant someone needed her.
Mia was twenty-three now.
Living in Portland.
Calling on Sundays.
She didn't know yet.
Claire heard Ethan's voice through the wall — low, careful, the particular cadence he used when he was managing someone rather than talking to them.
She couldn't make out words.
Only rhythm.
Question.
Pause.
Answer.
Pause.
Something firmer.
She reached for her phone and opened the notes app.
Added three lines to the document she had been building for eleven months.
*2:14 a.m.
— E.
making calls from guest room.
Confirm with Diana whether after-midnight communications to third parties are relevant to asset concealment timeline.*
She closed the app.
She was tired in a way that sleep wouldn't fix.
At 8:47 the next morning, Claire was dressed and sitting at the kitchen table with two cups of coffee when Ethan came downstairs.
He was wearing the same suit pants from the night before and a fresh shirt.
His hair was damp.
He had shaved.
He looked at the second cup.
"Is that—"
"Yes," she said.
"Sit down."
He sat.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
He wrapped both hands around the mug.
"I called Richard last night," he said.
Richard Holt.
Ethan's attorney of twelve years.
"I assumed."
"He wants to meet this week."
"Diana is available Thursday."
Ethan looked up.
"You already called her this morning?"
"I texted her at six."
Something shifted in his expression.
Not anger.
Something more like the feeling of reaching for a railing and finding nothing there.
"Claire." He set the mug down.
"I want to ask you something and I need you to answer me honestly."
"All right."
"Is there any version of this where we don't destroy everything?"
She looked at him for a long time.
"What version are you imagining?"
"I end things with Natalie.
Completely.
I restructure the consulting arrangement — make it legitimate, retroactively document everything properly.
We go to counseling.
We—"
"You restructure the consulting arrangement." Her voice was quiet.
"Retroactively."
"I can have the firm's accountant—"
"Marcus," she said.
"You mean Marcus.
My cousin's husband.
The same Marcus whose name is already in Diana's notes."
Ethan stopped.
"Ethan.
Retroactively restructuring financial documentation that is already in the possession of my attorney is not a solution.
It's a crjme."
The word sat between them.
He leaned forward.
His voice dropped.
"Claire, if this goes where I think you're taking it, it won't just be me.
The firm has thirty-seven active projects.
Seventy employees.
People with mortgages and kids in school.
If regulators start looking at the Hargrove transfers—"
"Don't." Her voice, for the first time, had an edge.
"Don't put those people on this table like they're your shield.
You made the choices.
You created the exposure."
"I'm asking you to think about the consequences."
"I have been thinking about the consequences.
For eleven months." She stood up.
Picked up her cup.
"I thought about every single employee.
I thought about the Hargrove family and what it would mean for their project.
I thought about our daughter and what it would mean for her to learn that her father had been using client funds to pay for his affair." She paused at the doorway.
"I still called Diana."
Ethan pushed back from the table.
"What exactly are you planning to do with that document?"
Claire turned.
"That depends entirely on what you do next," she said.
"I'd suggest talking to Richard before you decide."
She walked out of the kitchen.
Behind her, she heard the sound of his chair scraping back.
Then his phone being picked up from the table.
She went upstairs.
She sat on the edge of the bed, in the quiet of the room they hadn't shared in eleven months without her realizing it, and she sent Diana a message that said only: *He's scared.
He mentioned Hargrove.
Be ready.*
Diana's reply came ninety seconds later.
*I'm already ready.
See you at nine.
And Claire — don't let him make another call without documenting the time.*
Claire looked at her notes app.
*8:53 a.m.
— E.
made second call from kitchen table.
Location: 14 Westfield Drive.
Present: CW.*
She locked her phone.
Downstairs, she could hear Ethan's voice again.
Faster now.
Less careful.
And then she heard a second voice — not Ethan's.
May you like
Not on the phone.
Someone had come in through the front door.
