Genevieve stood frozen on the terrace, her diamond studs suddenly feeling very heavy.
Security had already appeared at her elbow.
She shook them off, spinning toward Julian with wild eyes.
"This is insane.
You're choosing her over me?
Over your own fiancée?"
Julian didn't raise his voice.
That was the worst part.
"I'm not choosing anyone, Genevieve.
You made your choice the moment you opened your mouth."
Meredith placed a calm hand on Julian's arm.
"Let her go, Julian."
But Genevieve wasn't finished.
She stepped closer to Meredith, voice dropping to something sharp and ugly.
"You think you've won something?
I know what you are.
I know what you did to the last woman Julian almost married.
Everyone in this family does."
The terrace went completely still.
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Genevieve.
Stop."
"No." She pointed a shaking finger at Meredith.
"Ask her what happened to Eleanor.
Ask her why that engagement ended.
Ask her who made that decision — and why."
Meredith's composure didn't crack.
But something shifted behind her eyes.
She turned slowly and walked back toward the garden without a word.
And that silence frightened Julian far more than anything Genevieve had said.
