Chapter 2: The Voice That Should Not Exist

Clara answered the call.
Silence on the other end.
Then breathing.
"Leonard?" Her voice broke on his name.
A long pause.
Then a man's voice — low, careful, like someone speaking from a room where he wasn't supposed to be heard.
"Mom."
Clara's knees nearly gave out.
She grabbed the edge of the casket to steady herself.
"You're alive."
"Mom, listen to me.
Don't say anything else.
Just listen."
Veronica lunged for the phone.
"Give that to me!"
Clara turned her body away and pressed the phone hard against her ear.
"Leonard, where are you?
What has she done?"
"I can't tell you yet.
It's not safe." His voice dropped even lower.
"Don't let them bury that man.
Don't sign anything.
Don't let Veronica near the firm's documents."
"Son—"
"Mom." A sharp breath.
"She thinks I'm d3ad.
That's the only reason I'm still breathing."
The line went dead.
Clara lowered the phone slowly.
The cemetery had gone completely silent.
Lawrence Cobb stared at her.
The young lawyer had stopped moving.
Even the gravediggers stood still.
Veronica's face had gone the color of ash.
"Who was that?" she whispered.
Clara looked at her for a long moment.
Then she looked down at the scattered documents that had fallen from Veronica's purse.
One page had landed face up.
At the top, in bold letters: **TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP — VANCE CONSTRUCTION GROUP.**
The signature line at the bottom was dated three days ago.
Leonard's name was signed on it.
But Leonard had just told her he was hiding for his life.
