Chapter 2: Whoever Showed Up

The garden went quiet.

Lauren set her glass down hard enough that champagne sloshed over the rim.

"Mother.

Who is that woman?"

Ruth didn't turn around.

She watched the young woman in white close both hands around the keys and hold them to her chest.

"Her name is Clara.

She was your father's student.

She sat with him every Thursday for the last two years of his life, when neither of you could find the time."

Gavin's jaw tightened.

"That's not fair."

"No," Ruth said.

"What wasn't fair was the night he came home from the hospital and the house was empty."

Lauren stepped forward.

"You don't know what was happening in our lives—"

"I know exactly what was happening." Ruth finally turned.

Her voice was calm and low.

"I also know what those keys open.

Your father and I built that property for thirty-one years.

He told me to give it to whoever showed up.

So I did."

Lauren's face went pale.

"That was our inheritance."

Ruth picked up her own glass from a nearby table.

"Then perhaps you should have shown up."

Across the grass, Clara was still standing at the fountain, holding the keys with both hands, her eyes wet, not smiling.

And that was when Lauren noticed the second envelope — still sealed — tucked inside the empty box Gavin was holding.

---

What's inside that second envelope — and does it change everything Ruth just did?

The full truth is more emotional than anyone expected.
