Chapter 2: The Message That Changed Everything

PART 2
The first thing I did when I got back to my room was call my attorney, Richard Holt.
Not my family.
Not a friend.
My attorney.
"Richard," I said, my voice still hoarse from the breathing tube.
"Execute everything we discussed.
Today."
"Already done, Camila.
The moment you went into surgery."
I closed my eyes and felt something close to peace.
What Alejandro didn't know was that three days before the operation, I had sat across from Richard for two hours.
We had restructured everything.
The condo was transferred back into my trust.
The credit cards were canceled.
The wire transfers to his parents' workshop — stopped permanently.
Every account he thought he shared with me had been quietly closed.
He had walked out of that hospital room holding divorce papers.
What he didn't realize was that he had also walked out of every comfort, every safety net, and every dollar he had spent fifteen years pretending was his.
That evening, my phone lit up.
It was Alejandro.
I let it ring.
Then a text came through.
*"Camila.
The card was declined at dinner.
There must be some kind of bank error.
Call me."*
A bank error.
I set the phone face-down on the blanket and looked out the window at the Chicago skyline — the skyline my father had helped build, one property at a time.
Then a second message arrived.
This one wasn't from Alejandro.
It was from Claudia.
And what she wrote made my bl00d run cold.
---
What did Claudia's message say — and what secret had she been hiding even from Alejandro?
The full truth is in the link below.
