"Pretend you're my wife. / Chapter 1 / 11

Chapter 1: The Man Who Stopped the Room

"Pretend you're my wife.

Dance with me.

Now." A complete stranger whispered those words beside my chair while my ex-husband watched from across the ballroom with the cousin he married after abandoning me pregnant.

I took the stranger's hand, and within seconds, conversations around us began fading as people realized exactly who I was about to dance with.

My name is Jessica Hale.

I'm twenty-nine, a pediatric nurse, and a single mother to my five-year-old daughter, Lily.

Three minutes earlier, I'd been trying not to cry at my sister Sophia's wedding.

Two hundred guests filled a glittering Chicago ballroom overlooking the river.

My family had seated me beside the kitchen doors.

Alone.

Then Tyler appeared.

My ex-husband.

"Dance with me, Jess."

"No."

His pregnant wife, Vanessa, stood behind him.

My cousin.

Tyler leaned closer.

"You always punish people for moving on."

I stared at him.

"You left three days after I told you I was pregnant."

"I was twenty-four."

"So was I."

Then his eyes traveled over my department-store dress and repaired shoes.

"You were supposed to become a doctor.

Instead, you work double shifts and raise a kid in a one-bedroom apartment."

"I'm a pediatric nurse."

"And you can barely pay your bills."

That one landed.

Tyler walked away.

Vanessa looked directly at me, placed both hands over her pregnant belly, and smiled.

I sat down before my knees betrayed me.

Then a man approached.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Early forties.

A faint scar crossed his chin.

He extended his hand.

"Pretend you're my wife."

I stared at him.

"You don't even know me."

"Jessica Hale.

Pediatric nurse.

Mother of Lily.

Sister of the bride."

My breath caught.

"How do you know that?"

"Because you need an ally."

His eyes moved toward Tyler.

"And so do I."

Apparently, his family was trying to arrange a relationship with a business associate's daughter.

One dance with another woman wouldn't stop them.

A secret wife would.

"This is insane."

"Probably."

"What's your name?"

"Giovanni Fierro."

At the next table, an older man stopped speaking mid-sentence.

His wife slowly lowered her champagne glass.

I looked back at Giovanni.

"Should that name mean something to me?"

His expression barely changed.

"Not tonight."

The orchestra shifted into a slow song.

Giovanni glanced behind me.

"Your ex is watching."

I turned.

Tyler was staring.

Vanessa wasn't smiling anymore.

Giovanni offered his hand again.

"Ten seconds."

"You're counting?"

"Nine."

For the first time that evening, I almost laughed.

"Eight."

I looked at Tyler.

Then Vanessa.

Then the stranger waiting patiently in front of me.

"Seven."

I put my hand in his.

Giovanni pulled me gently to my feet.

And something strange happened.

One conversation stopped.

Then another.

Then another.

People began turning toward us.

Not toward me.

Toward him.

Giovanni placed one hand at my waist and leaned close enough that only I could hear him.

"Whatever happens next, Jessica, don't let go of my hand."

That was the moment I realized I might have agreed to far more than one dance.

Who is Giovanni Fierro — and why did an entire ballroom go silent the moment he said his name?
