Chapter 2: What the Bank Records Knew

The hospital admitted Nora immediately.
Fever.
Infection.
The C-section wound had opened slightly.
The doctor pulled me aside and said if I had waited until morning, it could have been much worse.
I stood in that hallway holding Liam against my chest, listening to the fireworks outside, and I felt something cold settle inside me.
Not grief.
Not panic.
Something quieter than that.
A decision.
At 1:14 a.m., my phone lit up.
It was Chloe.
A video call.
She was laughing.
Music behind her.
A glass in her hand.
She didn't know I was back.
"Spencer!
Happy New Year!
You should SEE this place.
Mom got us the ocean suite.
Tell Nora we said hi."
I didn't speak for a moment.
"Where is the formula, Chloe?"
The smile didn't leave her face right away.
It faded slowly, like she was deciding how to answer.
"We left some.
She had enough for a few days."
"The refrigerator was empty.
Nora is in the hospital right now with an infection.
Liam has been crying for hours."
Silence.
Then, quietly, she said: "Spencer, you don't understand the full situation."
"Then explain it to me."
She hung up.
Thirty seconds later, my mother called.
I let it ring.
Then I opened my banking app and looked at the full transaction history for the first time.
What I found was not twelve thousand dollars.
It was much more than that.
And the transfers went back further than Miami.
