My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
I held the marriage certificate under the light and read the name beside Daniel's.
Eleanor Voss.
I didn't recognize it.
But Margaret did.
The moment I said the name out loud, her face went completely still.
"Where did you get that?" she said.
Not a question.
A warning.
"It was under my prenup," I said.
"The one you replaced while I was sleeping downstairs on my own wedding night."
Daniel stepped forward.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"Then explain it to me." My voice came out steadier than I expected.
"Are you still married to her?"
He didn't answer.
Margaret moved between us.
"That document is old.
It means nothing now."
"It means everything," I said.
"It means our marriage may not be legal.
It means everything I signed last nightβ" I stopped.
My throat tightened.
"You needed my signature before I found out."
Daniel finally spoke.
"Just calm down.
We can fix this quietly."
*Quietly.*
That one word told me everything.
They weren't afraid of losing me.
They were afraid of losing what I had brought into this marriage.
I reached for my phone.
And that's when Margaret's hand closed around my wrist.
"Don't," she said softly.
"You have no idea who you're dealing with." π¨
