Chapter 2: What She Found in the Lining

I couldn't fall apart.
Not here.
Not now.
I pressed my back against the cold wall and forced myself to breathe.
My legs were shaking.
The dr*gs were pulling at me like an undertow.
But my mind — my mind was fighting back.
*Think.
You have hours.
Use them.*
I crept back to the suite and locked the door.
The two white pills Flynn had left on the nightstand for later — I flushed them.
Then I searched every drawer, every pocket of every jacket he'd brought aboard.
That's when I found it.
A burner phone.
Tucked inside the lining of his garment bag.
My hands were trembling so badly I nearly dropped it.
I powered it on.
The last message thread was still open.
*"She sign everything?"*
*"Every page.
She didn't even read it."*
*"Good.
Make it clean."*
The contact name at the top wasn't saved as a name.
Just a number.
But the profile photo — tiny, blurry — showed a woman.
Young.
Smiling.
Wearing what looked like my engagement ring.
A sound outside the door made me freeze.
Flynn's voice, low and close: *"Sweetheart?
You feeling any better?
I brought you some tea."*
The handle turned.

What she did in the next sixty seconds changed everything.
