The moment Lorenzo's footsteps faded down the hallway, Mrs.

Gable's smile disappeared.

She turned to the staff line, her eyes moving slowly until they landed on Nora.

"You." Her voice dropped to something quiet and dangerous.

"I saw you sneaking food from the kitchen last night.

That stops now.

You touch anything in that kitchen again without permission and I will have you removed from this property tonight.

Pregnant or not."

Nora said nothing.

She pressed one hand against her side and kept her eyes forward.

But then one of the younger maids, a girl named Rosa, took a small step forward.

"Mrs.

Gable…

the old man's room.

It hasn't had heating for three days.

I checked this morning and—"

"Did I ask for your opinion?"

Rosa went pale and stepped back.

Mrs.

Gable straightened her jacket and looked at the group.

"No one goes to the east wing without my direct order.

No one speaks to Mr.

Moretti about his father's care.

That is my responsibility.

Are we clear?"

Silence.

Nora stared at the marble floor, her hands trembling.

Then, from somewhere deep in the east wing, a sound moved through the corridor.

A bell.

Faint but deliberate.

Three slow rings.

Every maid in the line recognized it.

It was the bell from room 4B.

Giovanni's bell.

The one no one had heard ring in over five years.
