Chapter 6: The Price of a Mother’s Silence

Nicholas faced Eleanor.

“Did you pay him?”

“Yes.”

Maria’s hand closed around the memory card.

“You changed my test?”

“The first test, twenty-five years ago.”

“You made me disappear.”

“I kept Malcolm from proving you were Lorenzo’s daughter.”

Claudia laughed.

“Listen to her make betrayal sound noble.”

Eleanor stepped toward Maria.

“Rosa begged me to hide your name.

Malcolm had already transferred money from the trust.

If he knew the second heir was alive, he would control you through your mother.”

“So you erased me instead.”

“I gave Rosa money, records, and a way out.”

“You gave me a lifetime of lies.”

Vivienne raised the lighter.

“Touching.

Now sign the release.”

A small voice came through the intercom.

“Mommy?”

Maria ran to the wall panel.

“Lucy, where are you?”

“In the room with the green curtains.”

“The west guest room,” Agnes said.

Claudia lunged for the intercom, but the officer caught her wrist.

“You are not leaving this hall.”

“You have no authority to hold me.”

“I have a recording showing you hurt a child and a witness who heard you use that child as leverage.”

Claudia looked at Vivienne.

“Do something.”

Vivienne dropped the lighter and ran toward the west stairs.

Nicholas blocked her.

“Move.”

“Give me the ledgers.”

“My father will take everything from you.”

“He already tried.”

Vivienne lowered her voice.

“Marry me tomorrow.

Maria receives five million dollars and a house.

Eleanor disappears again.

We tell the police Claudia acted alone.”

Claudia stared at her daughter.

“Vivienne!”

Nicholas did not move.

“And Lucy?”

“She gets the best schools, security, anything Maria wants.”

“You still think people are things you can price.”

“I think losing beautifully is still losing.”

Maria reached the west guest room first.

The door was locked, but Agnes produced a master key.

Lucy sat on the bed clutching her stuffed rabbit.

A phone beside her was still connected to the intercom.

Maria gathered her into her arms.

“Did anyone touch you?”

“Grandma Claudia said I had to stay quiet.”

“She is not your grandmother.”

Lucy held up a red button.

“This fell off her dress yesterday.”

Agnes examined it.

“That is not a button.

It is a voice recorder.”

Claudia’s face changed when they returned to the hall.

“Where did she get that?”

Lucy pressed the center.

Malcolm’s voice filled the corridor.

“Grip the child’s wrist hard enough to leave marks.

We need the doctor to say Maria caused them.”

Then Claudia answered, “Vivienne will never agree.”

“She already packed the suitcase.”

Vivienne’s hand loosened.

One ledger fell to the floor.

Maria looked at her.

“You knew your mother would hurt Lucy?”

“No.

I packed your things, but I never agreed to that.”

“You saw the marks.”

“I panicked.”

“You blamed me anyway.”

Vivienne covered her mouth, but Nicholas picked up the ledger.

“This proves you transferred money from the Moretti trust.”

“My father told me it was legal.”

“The transfers bear your signature.”

“He said the wedding would repair it!”

Eleanor took the second ledger.

“There are payments to Dr.

Hale, the security chief, and the clerk who issued my false de@th certificate.”

The officer turned to Dr.

Hale.

“Hand me your phone.”

Dr.

Hale slowly complied.

Vivienne seized the recording button from Lucy and threw it toward the fireplace.

Agnes caught it against her apron before it reached the flames.

“Not today,” Agnes said.

Claudia pointed at Eleanor.

“She started all of this.

She disappeared, changed records, and deceived her own son.”

“And I will answer for that,” Eleanor replied.

“Will you answer for Lucy?”

Claudia said nothing.

Sirens sounded beyond the front gates.

Vivienne looked toward the window.

“Father will stop this.”

A black car swept up the drive ahead of the police vehicles.

Malcolm stepped out with two lawyers and a court officer.

He entered holding a sealed order.

“This property and every document inside it are now under Vale control,” he said.

“Nicholas, you have ten minutes to leave your own home.”
