Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything

The ambulance arrived in eleven minutes.

I rode with Marianne, holding her hand the entire way.

Her fingers were ice cold.

Her breathing was so shallow I had to keep checking.

But she was alive.

At the hospital, the ER doctor pulled me aside almost immediately.

"Mr.

Cardenas…

the sedative levels in her system are significant.

This was not a natural collapse."

I grabbed the doorframe to steady myself.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying someone gave her a very precise dose.

Enough to slow her heart and breathing to the point where a private clinic physician might not catch it — especially if the examination was rushed."

Dr.

Hector Lozano.

The clinic.

The death certificate signed within hours.

I called Patricia's number.

Straight to voicemail.

I called my brother, Ramon.

He picked up on the first ring, and the first thing he said was:

"Alexander.

Don't sign anything.

Don't touch the company accounts.

I need to tell you something about Patricia — and about what Marianne found out three weeks ago."

My blood went cold.

"Ramon.

What did Marianne find out?"

The line went quiet for three full seconds.

Then: "She found the second will, Alexander.

The one your father wrote before he d\*ed.

Patricia has had it for two years."

I turned around slowly.

Rose Mendoza was standing in the hospital corridor behind me — still holding her canvas bag, tears running silently down her face.

"She called me," Rose whispered.

"Marianne called me the night before she collapsed.

She said she was sc\*red.

She said if anything happened to her…

I should find you."

What did Marianne discover — and who else knew?

The full truth is darker than anything in Part 2.
