Chapter 2: The Box That Should Have Been There

The doctor confirmed Lily's injuries at 1:17 a.m.
Bruising across both shoulders.
Muscle strain consistent with carrying a weight too heavy for her size.
The nurse wrote everything down without being asked.
My phone lit up at 1:34 a.m.
Claire.
I let it ring.
Then a text: *"Daniel, I can explain.
It wasn't what it looked like.
Call me back right now."*
She didn't ask about the children.
Not once.
At 2:08 a.m., Diane called.
I answered that one.
"You had no right to take them to the hospital without telling us," she said.
"You're making this into something it isn't."
"Lily has bruising across both shoulders, Diane."
Silence.
"She's a dramatic child.
You know that."
I hung up.
When I got home, I found something I hadn't noticed before.
The kitchen drawer — the one Claire kept locked — was open.
The small fireproof box inside was gone.
That box held our passports.
The children's birth certificates.
And the spare card linked to the account Marcus Vale didn't know I knew about.
Someone had been in this house after I left for the hospital.
I checked the server.
One more clip had recorded after I drove away.
The timestamp read 1:51 a.m.
I pressed play.
