Chapter 2: The Name She Never Told Me

I stared at that note until my hands stopped shaking.

Then I dialed.

A man answered on the second ring.

"Detective Ryan Cole."

I told him my name.

I told him how I got his number.

There was a pause — the kind that means someone is deciding how much to say.

"Is Laura with you right now?"

"She's asleep."

"Good.

Keep it that way."

He told me Laura had been under surveillance for eight months.

The company she said she worked for — the pharmaceutical marketing firm, the client meetings, the business trips — none of it was real.

"The accounts connected to her name have received over four hundred thousand dollars in the last two years," he said.

"We believe your joint accounts were used as part of the operation."

I looked at the bedroom door.

"She used our marriage," I said.

"Mr.

Harris." His voice was careful.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Laura isn't her real name."

The floor felt like it dropped.

"We've been trying to locate her for three years," Cole said.

"Before she was Laura Harris, she was someone else entirely — in another state, with another husband."

I couldn't speak.

"Mr.

Harris, do not confront her.

Do not let her know you called.

Can you get out of that house tomorrow morning without raising suspicion?"

I looked at the woman sleeping ten feet away.

The woman I had married.

The woman I apparently did not know at all.
