Chapter 2: The Photograph She Pulled From Her Pocket

I crossed the waiting room in what felt like three steps.
Clara flinched when I reached for her — actually flinched — like she was afraid I might h\*t her.
That stopped me cold.
The sister I remembered was never afraid of anything.
"Clara." My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"Where have you been?"
She looked down at her hands.
They were shaking.
"I can't explain it here."
"You've been g\*ne for ten years." My throat tightened.
"We buried you.
Mom never recovered.
She d\*ed thinking you were—"
"I know." Her voice cracked.
"I know what happened to Mom.
I was there."
I stared at her.
"What do you mean you were there?"
She finally looked up, and what I saw in her eyes wasn't relief.
It was fear.
Raw, exhausted, ten-years-deep fear.
"Sarah, listen to me carefully." She leaned forward and dropped her voice so low I had to strain to hear her.
"You cannot tell anyone you found me.
Not yet.
Not until I explain."
"Explain what?"
She reached into her coat pocket and placed something on the seat between us.
A photograph.
Old.
Slightly creased.
I looked down at it.
And the air left my body completely.
Because the face in that photograph was someone I recognized.
Someone who had stood beside me at Clara's funeral.
Someone who had cried.
Someone who, ten years ago, had personally identified her b\*dy.
