Chapter 2: The Medicine Isabella Never Asked For

I kept smiling as Vivien led me toward the dining room.

“Elena has something to tell you,” she said.

Elena entered carrying a tray.

Her hands were trembling.

Vivien’s eyes hardened.

“Go on.

Tell Lorenzo what his mother said.”

Before Elena could answer, my phone vibrated.

Rocco’s message read: SIX PAYMENTS LEFT ISABELLA’S TRUST.

ALL APPROVED WITH VIVIEN’S ACCESS CODE.

ELENA IS LISTED AS THE WITNESS.

I looked at Elena.

“Did you witness those payments?”

The tray slipped from her hands.

Vivien laughed nervously.

“Lorenzo, she doesn’t understand financial matters.”

“I didn’t sign anything,” Elena whispered.

Vivien seized her wrist beneath the table.

“Think carefully.”

I saw Elena wince, but I forced myself to remain calm.

Then a weak voice came from the doorway.

“Let her go.”

Vivien froze.

My mother, Isabella, stood there gripping the doorframe.

She looked pale, but her eyes were clear.

“I never approved your marriage,” she told Vivien.

“And I never authorized those payments.”

Vivien slowly released Elena.

Isabella turned to me.

“Lorenzo, ask her why she’s been changing my medicine every night.”
