Chapter 2: The Name on the Paper

Dad's voice dropped so low it barely filled the room.

"Vanessa.

What papers?"

She tried to laugh it off.

"It's nothing, Marcus.

A financial thing.

You're overreacting."

"You said the children won't matter anymore." He stepped closer.

"Those are my children."

Vanessa's eyes shifted to Grandma.

Cold.

Calculating.

"She edited that video.

You know how she feels about me."

Grandma didn't flinch.

"The timestamp is right there.

I didn't touch a single second of it."

Then Noah spoke again — quietly, from the corner where he'd been standing the whole time.

"She had papers on the kitchen table last week.

She made me leave the room.

But I saw the name on the top."

Everyone turned to look at him.

He swallowed hard.

"It said 'guardianship transfer.'"

The room went completely still.

Dad turned back to Vanessa slowly.

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

And that's when her phone buzzed on the counter — loud in the silence — and the screen lit up with a name none of us recognized.

But Vanessa's face told us everything.

She knew exactly who it was.

😳

What Dad found when he picked up that phone exposed a plan that had been months in the making.
