Chapter 2: What the Floor Was Keeping

My fingers found the edge of the seam and wouldn't let go.
I pressed down.
Nothing.
I pulled sideways.
Nothing.
Then I slid my nail into the gap and lifted — and the board came free with a soft, dry crack, as if it had been waiting for exactly this moment.
Beneath it was a metal box.
Old.
Dusty.
But the latch was clean.
Someone had opened it recently.
My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped it.
I sat on the floor and held it in my lap for a long moment before I could bring myself to look inside.
There was a letter on top.
Thaddeus's handwriting.
*"Mama.
If you're reading this, then she did exactly what I was afraid she would do."*
I couldn't breathe.
He had known.
He had known what she was capable of, and he had said nothing.
He had sent me here — to this cabin, to this cold, to this floor — on purpose.
Beneath the letter were documents.
A second will.
A property deed.
And a photograph I had never seen before — Thaddeus standing beside a lawyer I didn't recognize, both of them signing something, dated just three weeks before he d!ed.
Then my phone rang.
It was her.
I stared at the screen.
She never called me.
Not once in twenty years had she ever called me first.
