Chapter 2: The Document She Had Been Carrying All Along

Part 2 ⬇️
Her hand came down flat against my coffee table with a crack so loud I flinched back in my chair.
"You don't get to say no to us," Lennox said.
Her voice had dropped to something quiet and deliberate.
"This is Terrence's family home.
He has every right to be here."
"He has no such right," I said.
"His name is not on this deed."
She smiled then.
That was the part that frightened me most.
Not the anger.
The smile.
"Not yet," she said.
Terrence grabbed her arm.
"Lennox.
Stop."
She pulled free without even looking at him.
I sat very still.
"What does that mean?"
She didn't answer.
Instead she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document, setting it on the table in front of me like she had been carrying it there for weeks, waiting for exactly this moment.
"You should read that," she said.
"Before you make any more decisions about what belongs to you."
My hands were not steady when I picked it up.
Terrence had gone completely silent behind her.
He wasn't trying to stop her anymore.
He was just watching me.
And the expression on his face was not shame.
It looked like relief.
I unfolded the first page and felt the room tilt beneath me.
---
What was in that document — and did Terrence know about it all along?
