Chapter 2: Something in the Glass

Part 2 ⬇️

At the hospital, the doctor pulled my husband aside while I was still being examined.

I watched through the glass.

I saw his face change.

When he came back in, he wouldn't look at me right away.

"What did they find?" I asked.

He sat down slowly.

Took my hand.

"There was something in your drink at the family lunch.

Before any of this happened."

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

"They're running full tests.

But the doctor said it wasn't food.

It was something that shouldn't have been there."

The room went cold.

I thought back to that afternoon.

My mother had handed me a glass of juice.

She'd smiled while she did it.

My sister had watched me drink it.

Then two hours later, she'd walked straight at me in the yard.

It wasn't a fight that got out of hand.

It was a sequence.

My husband's jaw tightened.

"The trust document names your daughter as the primary beneficiary the moment she's born.

If she doesn't make it—"

He stopped.

We both knew who the next name on that document was.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from our cousin.

*"There's a second video.

Your mother doesn't know I kept recording."*

What's on that second video — and what did her mother do when no one was watching?
