At the hospital, they wouldn't let me see my own chart.
A nurse slipped out of the room and my husband stopped her in the hallway.
"What aren't you telling us?"
She looked down.
"Sir, someone called ahead.
Before the ambulance even arrived."
He went still.
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
But she didn't have to.
My mother's number was on the call log.
She had phoned the hospital eighteen minutes before I got there.
Not to warn them I was coming.
To tell them I had a history of self-harm.
They had flagged my file before I even walked through the door.
My husband came back into the room and took my hand.
His jaw was tight.
"She tried to make them think you did this to yourself."
I couldn't speak.
Then the door opened.
It wasn't a doctor.
It was my cousin.
The one with the recording.
She was shaking.
She held out her phone with both hands.
"There's something else on here," she whispered.
"Something recorded before the fight even started.
You need to hear what they said about the baby."
