Chapter 2: Four Words That Broke the Room

**— PART 2 —**

My hands were shaking as I read the highlighted sentence a second time.

My father crossed the room in four steps and grabbed the document from my hands.

His face went gray.

"Where did you get this?" he whispered.

"Noah found it.

Vanessa told Mom to hide it from me."

He looked at my mother.

She was already crying.

"You knew?" he said.

She didn't answer.

That silence told me everything.

Vanessa pushed past the security guard and grabbed my arm.

"You don't understand what that document means.

You never understood anything about this family."

I pulled my arm free.

"Then explain it to me."

She stopped.

Her jaw tightened.

Her new husband put his hand on her shoulder and leaned close.

"Vanessa.

Don't say another word."

That was the moment I realized this wasn't just about a will.

Someone had coached her.

Someone had prepared for this moment.

I looked down at Noah.

He was watching his grandfather's face fall apart in real time.

Then my father said four words so quietly I almost missed them.

"This was your mother's."

Vanessa's face crumpled.

And I suddenly understood why she had needed me gone before anyone opened that envelope.
