Chapter 2: I Know Mommy's Voice

I sat on the kitchen floor with Sophie wrapped in a towel, her small body still shaking against my chest.

Vanessa hadn't moved from the back door.

She was watching us.

Not crying.

Not apologizing.

Just watching.

"Who was on that call, Vanessa?"

She didn't answer.

"I heard her voice.

Sophie heard her voice.

Who was it?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"You're upset.

You're not thinking clearly."

I stood up slowly.

"I pulled my daughter out of the pool.

I watched the camera footage.

I heard a woman's voice on your phone.

And my three-year-old just told me that was her mother."

Something shifted in Vanessa's eyes.

Not guilt.

Something colder.

"Rachel is d*ad," she said.

"Sophie is confused.

She almost dr*wned — she doesn't know what she heard."

But Sophie lifted her head from my shoulder and looked straight at Vanessa.

"I know Mommy's voice," she said quietly.

I reached for Vanessa's phone on the counter.

She moved fast — faster than I expected — and grabbed it first.

"Don't," she said.

That one word told me everything.

I looked at her and said, "Where is Rachel?"

Vanessa's hand tightened around the phone.

Then it rang.

The screen lit up and I saw the name before she could turn it over.
