Chapter 2: The Name He Already Knew

Every g*n was still pointed at me.

Dante's grip on my wrist didn't loosen.

I told him everything.

The booth.

The partition.

Vanessa's voice.

The words she'd said to the man beside her.

*"Cut just enough.

They'll fail on the mountain road."*

The rain kept falling.

Nobody moved.

Then one of his men stepped forward.

"Boss.

We need to get you out of here."

Dante didn't look at him.

He kept his eyes on me.

"Her name."

"I don't know his name," I said.

"But Vanessa called him Marco."

Something shifted in Dante's expression.

Not shock.

Something colder than shock.

He knew that name.

"Get her in the car," he said quietly.

"Mr.

Moretti — I'm just a waitress.

I don't want any part of —"

"You're already part of it." He let go of my wrist and stood slowly, favoring his left side.

"You've been part of it since the moment you followed me up that road."

I looked at the men surrounding us.

At the ravine behind me.

At the rain.

I had no choice.

They put me in the back of the lead SUV.

Dante sat beside me, saying nothing.

Then his phone lit up on the seat between us.

May you like

A message from Vanessa.

*"Is it done?"*
