James moved before I did.
I had never seen my father run.
Not once in my entire life.
But he crossed that yard in seconds, grabbed Helen's arm with both hands, and pulled Lily away from the f!re so hard that Helen stumbled backward into the grass.
The relatives went silent.
Helen looked up from the ground β and she was smiling.
"You see?" she said.
"You see how she makes everything about herself?"
I was already holding Lily, checking her face, her hands, her tiny fingers.
She was unharmed.
She was still sleeping.
My legs nearly gave out.
Then Rebecca spoke.
"Mom was never going to d*op her.
She was making a point."
I turned around slowly.
"A point."
"You needed to understand what you took from this family."
James stepped between us.
His voice was quiet, but I had never heard it like that before.
"Helen.
Rebecca.
Both of you need to stop right now."
Helen stood up, brushed the grass from her dress, and looked at him with an expression I had never seen her use on my father.
"Don't you dare take her side, James.
Not after what I found."
The yard went completely still.
"What you found?" James said.
Helen reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope.
"I think everyone here should know the truth about Margaret's pregnancy."
My heart stopped.
I had no idea what was in that envelope.
But the way Rebecca's eyes dropped to the ground told me she already did.
