Chapter 2: The Wrong Name

Part 2 ⬇️

"You put your hands on my mother?" David's voice was ice.

Not worry.

Not shock.

Ice.

I sat on the edge of the bed with Chloe pressed against my chest, her breathing finally slowing, and I could not believe what I was hearing.

"David, she str*ck our daughter.

Chloe's face is—"

"I don't care what happened.

You do not touch my mother.

Ever."

Something cold moved through me.

"You don't care what happened," I repeated slowly.

"Mom already called me.

She told me everything.

You lost your mind over a pizza slice, Rachel."

Chloe shifted against my shoulder.

I pressed my hand to her bruised cheek and felt the heat still radiating off her skin.

"She made our baby bl**d, David."

Silence.

Then: "She's two.

Kids fall.

You're being dramatic."

I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it.

When I put it back, my voice was completely flat.

"She didn't fall."

"I'll deal with this when I get home," he said.

"Do not do anything else.

And Rachel — do not embarrass this family."

He hung up.

I sat there holding Chloe while Margaret's voice drifted under the door, still talking to someone on her own phone.

Calm now.

Almost cheerful.

And then I heard her say a name I was not supposed to hear.

Not David's name.

Someone else's.
