Chapter 2: The Phone Call That Changed His Face

The first mover lifted one end of the sectional.

Evan grabbed the other end.

"Don't touch that."

The mover looked at me.

I nodded once.

"Sir," the supervisor said quietly, "we have a signed work order and proof of purchase.

I'd ask you to step back."

Evan didn't step back.

"This is my house.

That sofa is in my house."

"It was purchased by Mrs.

Carter.

Entirely.

With documentation."

Linda appeared in the doorway between the dining room and the hall.

The satisfied smile was gone.

Something harder had replaced it.

"Evan.

Call your lawyer."

"I don't need a lawyer, Mom.

She can't just—"

"Call him now."

That was the moment I noticed Evan's father.

Gerald Carter had been quiet all evening.

He was always quiet.

But he wasn't watching the movers.

He wasn't watching Evan.

He was watching me.

And his expression wasn't angry.

It was something closer to shame.

When our eyes met, he looked away fast — toward the window, toward nothing.

I had seen that look before.

Once.

Two years ago.

Right after a phone call he had taken in the garage with the door closed.

I had never asked about it.

Maybe I should have.

The second mover began wrapping the dining chairs.

Linda made a sound I had never heard from her before.

"Those were at our table for Christmas."

"Yes," I said.

"They were."

"You can't take Christmas."

I picked up my document box.

"Watch me."

That's when Evan's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went white.
