Chapter 2: The Second Signature

My attorney's name was Karen Shields.
She had been practicing family law for twenty-two years, and when I walked into her office that morning with the folder, she didn't say a word for a long time.
She just looked at the signature.
Then she looked at me.
"How long have you been married?" she asked.
"Four years," I said.
She nodded slowly.
"And you're certain you never signed this."
"I've never seen that document in my life."
She set it down carefully, the way you set something down when you don't want to disturb the evidence.
Then she picked up her phone and called someone — a forensic document examiner she had worked with before.
She didn't explain why.
She just said, "I'm sending something over today.
Clear your afternoon."
When she hung up, she looked at me again.
"There's something else you should know," she said.
"This type of guardianship clause doesn't get drafted overnight.
Someone planned this.
And whoever signed your name — they've done it more than once."
She slid a second page across the desk.
It was a property transfer.
My name.
My signature.
A house I didn't know we owned — transferred out of my name eighteen months ago.
My phone buzzed on the table between us.
It was David.
*Come home.
We need to talk.
Alone.*
