Chapter 2: The Key in the Lock

I lifted my phone and hit record.

My hands were shaking so badly I had to press them against the pillar to keep the camera still.

Chloe pressed her face into my shoulder, not making a sound.

She understood without me saying a word.

I caught everything.

Evelyn's face.

The man's face.

The key changing hands.

The envelope.

Her voice giving him our schedule like she was reading a grocery list.

When they finally walked away in opposite directions, I stood behind that pillar for a long moment, unable to move.

That night, I said nothing to David.

I watched him eat dinner, laugh at something Chloe said, and kiss me on the cheek before bed.

I lay in the dark beside him and stared at the ceiling, wondering — does he know?

At 6:47 the next morning, David left for work.

At 7:15, I told Chloe to stay in her room and not come out no matter what she heard.

At 7:28, two minutes before I was supposed to leave, I heard it.

A key sliding into the back door lock.

I didn't move.

I stood in the kitchen doorway and watched the handle turn slowly, then stop.

Then I heard a second sound that made my stomach drop — a quiet voice outside, speaking into a phone.

"She's still inside.

I can see her car."

A pause.

Then the voice said three words I will never forget:

"Call Evelyn now."
