My Mother-in-Law Left My Six-Year-Old Daughter Alone in a Parking Garage for Five Hours While She Took the Other Grandchildren Shopping.
When I Found Mia Beside a Concrete Pillar, She Didn't Run to Me.
She Just Whispered, "Grandma told me not to move."
That sentence shattered something inside me.
Mia was cold, hungry, and terrified she would get in trouble for leaving the exact spot Patricia had chosen.
I wrapped her in my husband's jacket and carried her into the restaurant where the rest of the family was laughing over dinner.
Shopping bags surrounded Patricia's chair.
The other children were eating fries.
Nobody looked worried.
Then Patricia saw Mia in my arms.

I didn't scream.
I didn't argue.
I sat Mia beside me, pulled out my phone, pressed record, and placed it on the table.

"Patricia, explain to everyone why my six-year-old daughter was left alone in a parking garage for five hours."
Every fork stopped.
Daniel stood behind me trembling.
