Michael's hand didn't shake.
That was what scared me most.
He held the phone steady, his eyes moving between Diane and Ryan like he already knew exactly what he was going to do with what he had.
"Michael, put that down," Diane said.
Her voice had changed.
The cruelty was gone.
What replaced it was something closer to fear.
"You planned this before she even walked through the door." He wasn't asking.
"I heard you both in the kitchen.
You wanted her to lose the baby."
The room went completely silent.
Ryan stood up slowly.
"Dad, that's not—"
"Don't." Michael's voice cracked.
"I raised you better than this."
I was still on the floor.
The pain was coming in waves.
I pressed both hands to my stomach and tried to breathe.
Then Diane did something I will never forget.
She looked down at me and said, quietly, almost calmly: "It was never your baby to keep."
Ryan said nothing.
I looked at my husband — the man who had begged me to come tonight — and he looked away.
That's when Michael knelt beside me, put his hand over mine, and said, "We're getting you to the hospital.
And then you're going to hear everything on this recording."
He stood and looked at his son.
"All of it, Ryan.
Including the part about the papers you had her sign."
My heart stopped.
What papers?
