Chapter 2: Someone Was Still Trying

Part 2 ⬇️
Caroline's face went white.
"Emma, I can explain—"
"Don't." I held up my hand.
My voice was steady.
My hands were not.
I turned to Daniel.
"Did you authorize that transfer?"
He said nothing.
He just stood there gripping the back of his chair like it was the only thing holding him up.
"Daniel.
Answer me."
"It was temporary," he finally said.
"We were going to put it back before you noticed."
The room erupted.
His aunts started talking over each other.
His uncle pushed back from the table.
Vivian slammed her hand down and told everyone to be quiet.
But I was already looking at Caroline.
She was the one who had helped me set up that emergency account two years ago.
She was the only other person who knew it existed.
"You gave them access," I said quietly.
"You gave them my account information."
Caroline's eyes filled with tears.
"She said you'd never find out.
She said Daniel would handle it."
"Handle it." I repeated the words slowly.
Then my phone buzzed.
It was my bank's fraud department.
A second transfer had just been initiated.
$200,000.
Pending.
Flagged for review.
Someone was trying again.
Right now.
While I was standing in that room.
💔 Emma thought the worst was already over.
She had no idea what was still happening — and who else was involved.
