Chapter 2: What the Camera Remembered

Part 2 ⬇️
The room went dead quiet.
Everyone stared at Daniel.
He was standing now, his chair knocked back behind him, his face pale.
"Sarah, I'm warning you," he said.
"Turn it off."
I didn't move.
The footage showed Evelyn's kitchen from earlier that evening.
The timestamp read forty minutes before dinner.
And there was Daniel — standing right beside his mother at the counter.
Watching her open the peanut butter jar.
Saying nothing.
Then he looked directly at the camera, reached up, and angled it away from the counter.
He knew the camera was there.
He moved it on purpose.
Daniel's sister gasped.
"Danny…
you knew?"
"It's not what it looks like," he said.
"Then what does it look like?" I asked.
He couldn't answer.
Evelyn stood up slowly and smoothed her dress like nothing had happened.
"This family handles its problems privately," she said.
"Whatever you think you saw, Sarah, you are a guest in this house.
You have always been a guest."
"I'm your son's wife.
Sophie is your granddaughter."
"Sophie," Evelyn said quietly, "was never part of my plan for Daniel."
The room went colder than I had ever felt it.
And then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen — and his face collapsed completely.
