Chapter 2: The Name on the Account

The officer held up the folder and looked straight at me.
"Mr.
Bradley, do you recognize this document?"
I took it from him.
My hands were shaking.
It was the deed to my house — but the signature on the transfer line wasn't mine.
Someone had forged my name.
My mother stopped screaming.
For the first time all evening, she went completely still.
Mason tried to speak.
"It's not what it looks like.
She asked me to help her protect the family assets—"
"Protect them from who?" I said.
"From Amy?
From me?"
He looked at the ground.
Then my aunt Betsy stepped forward, and what she said next made my stomach turn.
"Connor, your mother has been planning this for over a year.
The money you sent every month…
it didn't go to groceries.
There's an account.
In Teresa's name only.
We tried to tell you, but she said if anyone spoke up, she'd make sure Amy had nowhere to go."
Amy grabbed my arm.
She hadn't said a word since we came back inside.
But her face told me she already knew.
"How long?" I asked her quietly.
She looked down at Frederick, still burning with fever in my arms.
"Since before he was born," she whispered.
That was the moment I realized this wasn't just about the deed.
There was something else in that folder — something the officer hadn't shown me yet.

What Connor found on the next page changed everything he thought he knew about his own family.
