Chapter 7: What Lucas Knew

Lucas showed up at the front door at noon.

He did not knock.

He used a key.

Gabriel was in the home office.

I was in the kitchen with my mother, who was teaching Mateo how to fold a corn tortilla properly.

Mateo was deeply focused on getting it right.

Lucas walked in and stopped when he saw me.

"Where's Gabriel?"

"Why do you have a key to this house?"

He held it up.

"Mom gave it to me."

"Beatrice does not have the authority to give anyone a key to this house."

"She lives here."

"As a guest.

Her name is not on the deed." I held out my hand.

"Give it to me."

Lucas looked at my hand.

He looked at my mother.

He looked at Mateo, who had stopped folding and was watching him with calm, unblinking attention.

Lucas put the key on the counter.

He did not put it in my hand.

"I need to talk to Gabriel," he said.

"Then knock next time and wait to be let in."

I went to get Gabriel.

They sat in the living room.

I stayed in the kitchen, close enough to hear.

"Gabriel," Lucas said, "I need you to understand where Mom is coming from."

"I understand exactly where she's coming from."

"She's scared.

She sold her house.

She has nowhere to go."

"She has the room in our new house.

That offer stands."

"She doesn't want to move again.

She's sixty-seven years old.

She wants stability."

"Then she should not have filed a legal motion to delay our closing."

A pause.

"That was my idea," Lucas said.

Silence.

"Yours," Gabriel said.

"I thought — if we could slow things down, maybe you'd reconsider.

Maybe you'd let her stay in this house and find somewhere else for yourselves."

"This house is sold, Lucas."

"I know that now." Lucas's voice dropped.

"I didn't fully understand how far along it was.

I thought there was more room to maneuver."

"There wasn't."

"I know." Another pause.

"Gabriel, I'm asking you to not punish her for something I pushed her into.

She was upset and I told her there was a legal option and she believed me because I'm her son and she trusts me."

I stood very still by the kitchen counter.

It was the most honest thing I had ever heard Lucas say.

Gabriel was quiet for a long moment.

"Is the motion being withdrawn?"

"Farrow is filing the withdrawal this afternoon."

"All of it?

No amended version, no backup filing?"

"All of it."

"Okay." Gabriel's voice was tired.

"Lucas.

I need you to hear me.

What happened to Sophia in this house — the padlock, the electricity, the notes — that was not acceptable.

I don't care whose idea it was or who encouraged it.

It happened.

And I will not pretend it didn't."

"I know."

"Does Mom know that I know the full extent of it?"

A pause.

"I don't think she understands how seriously you're taking it."

"Then make sure she does.

Because the room in the new house is still available.

But it comes with conditions.

And if those conditions aren't met, the offer disappears."

"What conditions?"

"Sophia is treated with respect.

In every house I own, for as long as she visits.

No notes.

No padlocks.

No comments about hierarchy or outsiders or real family.

If it happens once — once — she leaves.

Permanently."

Lucas was quiet.

"She won't like that."

"I'm not asking her to like it."

I heard Lucas stand up.

"I'll talk to her," he said.

"Good."

The front door opened and closed.

I walked into the living room.

Gabriel was sitting with his elbows on his knees, looking at the floor.

"Do you believe him?" I said.

"I believe he's scared too," Gabriel said.

"Whether that's enough — I don't know."

I sat beside him.

"The motion is being withdrawn."

"Yes."

"Then Friday happens."

"Yes."

He looked at me.

"Camila.

I'm sorry.

For all of it.

For not seeing it sooner.

For not —"

"Stop," I said.

"You saw it when it mattered."

He nodded slowly.

From the kitchen, we could hear my mother's voice, patient and warm, walking Mateo through the fold again.

*Like this, mijo.

Press it gently.

There.*

Gabriel closed his eyes for a moment.

May you like

When he opened them, something in his face had settled.

"Let's get through Friday," he said.
