Chapter 2: The Signature That Could Not Be Explained

Part 2 👇

Judge Vance read the second document in silence.

The courtroom waited.

Then he set it down slowly and looked at Eleanor.

"Mrs.

Owens," he said.

"Are you aware that your signature appears on this financial authorization — dated the same week your daughter was hospitalized?"

Eleanor's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Julian leaned toward her and hissed, "You told me that was handled."

"It was supposed to be," she whispered back.

But the judge had heard every word.

"Mr.

Owens.

Mrs.

Owens." His voice dropped.

"This document suggests that funds held in Victoria's name were redirected without her knowledge or consent while she was unable to act on her own behalf."

A woman in the gallery gasped.

Julian stood up.

"She's lying.

She fabricated that."

Judge Vance didn't raise his voice.

"Sit down, Mr.

Owens.

Or I will have you removed."

Julian sat.

I reached into the folder one more time.

A third document.

Bank records.

Dates.

Transfer amounts.

Every transaction they thought I would never find.

Eleanor grabbed Julian's arm.

And then — from the back of the courtroom — a door opened.

A man I hadn't seen in seven years walked in.

My mother's face went completely white.

Because she knew exactly who he was.

And she knew what he was carrying.
