Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Said Out Loud

PART 2

The transfers went back fourteen months.

Not weeks.

Not a few bad decisions.

Fourteen months of quiet, steady withdrawals — while Barron kissed me goodbye every morning and told me we were building something together.

Tony's voice was low and careful.

"How many transfers total?"

I counted.

My hand was shaking.

"Thirty-one."

"All to Keller accounts?"

"Most of them.

But there's one that's different." I zoomed in.

"It's a woman's name.

First name only.

*Renata.*"

The line went silent for three full seconds.

"Does that name mean anything to you?" Tony asked.

It didn't.

Not then.

I called my mother-in-law Celina — the same woman I had nursed back to health after her surgery, the woman who once held my face in her hands and called me her daughter.

She picked up on the second ring.

"Celina, who is Renata?"

The pause that followed lasted too long.

"Where did you hear that name?" she finally said.

Her voice had changed completely.

"Answer me.

Who is she?"

Another silence.

Then, barely above a whisper: "You need to ask Barron."

"Celina—"

The line went d*ad.

I stood in that hotel room staring at my phone, my mother watching me from the edge of the bed, and I understood — she knew.

She had always known.

And no one had said a single word to me.
