Chapter 2: Seat 7C

Julian's mouth opened.
No words came out.
Chloe was already seated in 7A, scrolling through her phone.
She didn't look up until Elena calmly lifted her carry-on into the overhead bin and settled into 7C.
Then Chloe saw Julian's face.
"Julian?
What's wrong?"
He said nothing.
His hand gripped the armrest.
Elena fastened her seatbelt, smoothed her jacket, and turned to look at him directly for the first time.
"You look pale, sweetheart," she said quietly.
"Long morning?"
Julian leaned toward her, his voice dropping to a sharp whisper.
"Elena.
This is not what it looks like."
"I know exactly what it looks like," she replied.
"That's why I brought reading material."
She reached into the leather folder and placed a single photograph face-up on her tray table.
It was Julian and Chloe.
Outside the boutique hotel in Back Bay.
Chloe went completely still.
"Who is she?" Chloe whispered.
Julian said nothing.
"I'm his wife," Elena said pleasantly.
"Twelve years.
We have a daughter.
Her name is Maya."
The color drained from Chloe's face next.
But what none of them knew yet was that the leather folder contained something far more damaging than photographs — and Elena's lawyer had already been on the phone that morning.
---
What Elena pulled from that folder next left Julian with nowhere to run.
