Chapter 2: The Name That Should Not Have Been There

I smiled at Courtney.

I even thanked her for the fruit.

Because the moment you show your hand, you lose.

And I had no intention of losing.

That night, after Jared fell asleep in the chair beside my bed, I called the one person he never knew I trusted — my college roommate, Dana, who was now a medical attorney.

"I need everything," I whispered.

"Surgical authorization forms.

Who signed.

What time.

Which doctor."

Dana went quiet for a moment.

"Shelby…

do you understand what you're telling me?"

"Every word."

The next morning, a hospital administrator I had never seen before came to my room.

He said he needed to "review my discharge paperwork." But his hands were shaking.

And he wouldn't look me in the eye.

Before he left, he slid a folded piece of paper under my water glass.

I waited until I was alone.

I opened it.

It was a copy of the surgical consent form.

Jared's signature was there.

But so was a second signature — the attending physician.

And that doctor's name was not on any of my official medical records.

Someone had brought in an outside doctor.

Someone had planned this before I even lost the baby.

I sat very still, staring at that name.

Then my phone buzzed.

It was a voicemail from a number I didn't recognize.

I pressed play.

And the voice I heard made my bl00d run cold.
