Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 👇
The first page was a bank transfer.
$15,000.
Daniel's name at the top.
Chloe's account at the bottom.
His mother picked it up before anyone could stop her.
She read it once.
Then again.
Her hand began to shake.
"Daniel." Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
"What is this?"
Daniel grabbed for the folder.
I pulled it back.
"There's more," I said.
I laid the next page flat on the table.
A screenshot.
Chloe's message to Daniel, dated the same week he told me we couldn't afford a night nurse.
*"Thank you for the deposit on the apartment.
The baby and I are so lucky to have you."*
Someone at the table made a sound.
I didn't look up.
Daniel's father set his glass down slowly.
The clink of crystal against the tablecloth was the only sound in the room.
"It's not what it looks like," Daniel said.
His voice had changed completely.
The confidence was gone.
"Jennifer, please.
Not here.
Not in front of everyone."
"You chose here," I said.
"You planned this party.
You invited all of these people.
You stood at that podium and thanked me."
His mother turned to him.
Her eyes were wet.
"Is the baby yours?" she asked.
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, my phone buzzed on the table.
A name lit up the screen.
Chloe.
