Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

Part 2 👇
The first page was a bank transfer.
$15,000.
Daniel's name at the top.
Chloe's account at the bottom.
His mother picked it up before anyone could stop her.
"Daniel." Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"What is this?"
Daniel grabbed for the paper.
"It's not what it looks like—"
"Then what does it look like?" his father said.
He hadn't moved.
His glass was still in his hand.
"Because it looks like you've been sending money to another woman while your wife was pregnant."
The table went completely still.
I turned to the next page and slid it toward his mother without a word.
It was a screenshot.
Chloe's message.
The one about the OB/GYN appointment.
The one about feeling the baby kick.
Daniel's mother read it once.
Then she set it down very carefully, the way people do when their hands are shaking and they don't want anyone to see.
"Is the baby yours?" she asked him.
Daniel said nothing.
That silence was its own answer.
His coworker near the back of the room stood up slowly and walked out.
Then another.
Then two more.
Daniel finally looked at me.
Not with anger.
Not with the confidence he'd worn all afternoon.
He looked like a man watching everything collapse and realizing he had built it that way himself.
"Jennifer, please—"
"I want a divorce," I said.
Calm.
Clear.
"The papers are already drafted."
His mother covered her mouth.
But that wasn't the moment that broke the room.
The moment that broke the room was when my phone buzzed on the table — and Daniel saw the name on the screen.
---
What Jennifer discovered next — and who that call was really from — changes everything.
