Chapter 2: The Name No One Was Supposed to Say

Brenda's eyes darted from Andrew to me and back again.
For a moment, she looked like she might run.
"Andrew, go back inside," she said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I know exactly what I'm talking about." He shifted on his crutches and looked directly at me.
"Mrs.
Laura, I'm sorry.
I should have seen this sooner."
He reached back through the doorway and lifted a manila folder from the bedside table.
Brenda lunged forward.
"Don't you dare—"
"It's too late for that." Andrew held the folder out to me.
My hands were steady as I opened it.
Inside were bank statements — but not from any account I recognized.
The account was in Mark's name.
Transfers had been going out every month for nearly two years.
Regular amounts.
Always on the first of the month.
All going to the same name.
A name I didn't recognize.
"Who is this?" I asked quietly.
Andrew looked at Brenda.
Brenda looked at the floor.
"Ask your husband," she finally said.
"Ask him who Margaret Coles is."
The corridor felt like it was closing in around me.
Two years of transfers.
A name I had never heard.
And the look on Brenda's face — not guilt anymore.
Something closer to satisfaction.
