Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Brandon pushed through the guests and looked at the table.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he laughed.

"Gwen.

What is this?"

"Exactly what you paid for," she said.

His face changed.

"You're embarrassing this family in front of everyone."

"No." Gwen's voice was steady.

"You did that.

Eight years ago."

She pulled out her phone and opened a document.

A long list of numbers.

Dates.

Transfers.

Every party, every surgery bill, every Christmas gift he had promised to repay.

"Forty-three thousand, six hundred dollars," she said.

"That's what I've covered for this family since we got married.

I have every receipt."

The room went completely silent.

Rosalind grabbed Brandon's arm.

"Say something."

But Brandon wasn't looking at his mother.

He was staring at the woman standing next to the district attorney's wife — a woman Gwen had never seen before.

And from the look on his face, he knew her very well.

The woman didn't smile.

She just opened her handbag and placed a folded envelope on the table next to the noodle cups.

Heather whispered, "Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

Gwen looked at the envelope.

Then she looked at Brandon.

He took one step back.
