Chapter 4: The Third Name

"Who else has seen this file?" I asked.

Edmund's hands were flat on the table now.

"Only your father and myself."

"That's not what I asked." I held the phone toward him so he could read the message.

"I asked who else knew about page nine."

He looked at the screen for a long moment.

Then he looked at me.

"Your father had a second attorney review the investigator's report," he said.

"A specialist in trust law.

It was necessary — the BLUEBIRD structure is complex, and your father wanted it airtight."

"Name."

"Daniel Voss."

The name landed like something dropped from a height.

"Lauren's father," I said.

"Yes."

I sat back down.

"So the man my father hired to protect Ellie's trust — was the father of the woman Grant never divorced."

Edmund said nothing.

Which was its own kind of answer.

"Did my father know that when he hired him?"

"No.

He discovered it approximately six months before he passed." Edmund's voice was careful, measured.

"He removed Daniel Voss from all active matters immediately.

But Daniel had already seen the full file.

Including the trust activation clause.

Including the guardian provision."

"And you didn't think to tell me this yesterday."

"I needed to confirm something first."

"Confirm what?"

Edmund reached into the second folder and placed a single sheet on the table.

It was a wire transfer record.

The originating account belonged to Daniel Voss.

The receiving account was a numbered holding company.

The holding company's registered director was Grant Mercer.

I looked at the transfer date.

Fourteen months ago.

Two months after Ellie's second birthday.

Three years before the BLUEBIRD trust would activate.

"They've been coordinating for over a year," I said.

"At minimum," Edmund said.

"There may be earlier transfers through different vehicles.

My office is working on that now."

"Daniel Voss helped design the trust structure," I said.

"He knew exactly which clauses to exploit.

He told Grant how to build the custody case.

He told Lauren what to sign and when."

"That is my current understanding, yes."

I thought about my father — careful, methodical, a man who had built an empire by trusting very few people and verifying everyone.

He had caught it.

He had pulled Daniel Voss out.

But he had run out of time to finish dismantling what Voss had already set in motion.

He had left me the file instead.

"I need two things from you," I said.

"First, I need every communication between Daniel Voss and this firm preserved and flagged.

Everything.

Second, I need you to tell me whether Grant's bigamy affects Ellie's trust status."

"It strengthens it," Edmund said.

"If the marriage was invalid, Grant's name on Ellie's birth certificate as spouse carries no legal weight in trust governance.

You are the sole trustee.

Unchallenged."

"And Lauren's guardian document."

"Signed under a fraudulent representation of her relationship to the family.

Void."

For the first time since the hotel lobby, I felt something loosen in my chest.

Then my office line rang.

My assistant's voice came through the speaker on the conference table.

"Ms.

Kingsley.

I'm sorry to interrupt.

There's a man downstairs who says he needs to speak with you urgently." A pause.

"He says his name is Daniel Voss.

He says he has information about your daughter that you don't have yet."

Edmund went very still.

I looked at him.

May you like

He looked at me.

"Send him up," I said.
