Chapter 2: She Had Been Watching All Along

David opened his mouth, closed it, then tried to smile.

"Emily, sweetheart, let's not do this right now."

Emily didn't move.

She was still holding Melissa's place card with both hands, and her voice was very quiet when she said, "Dad.

Answer me."

Melissa reached across the table and touched David's arm.

That was her mistake.

Emily looked at her — really looked at her — and something shifted in my daughter's face that I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Something colder.

"Who invited you?" Emily asked.

Melissa started to speak.

"Your father thought it would be—"

"I didn't ask my father." Emily set the card down carefully, like she was controlling every movement.

"I asked you."

The table nearest to us had gone quiet.

A woman I didn't recognize leaned toward her husband and whispered something.

I could feel the moment spreading outward through the room.

David stepped forward.

"Emily, I can explain—"

"You had Mom's card removed." It wasn't a question.

Her voice didn't rise.

That stillness scared me more than tears would have.

"You planned this before today."

Then Emily turned to me, and what she said next — quietly, just for me — made my knees go weak.

I never knew she had been watching all along.
